Thomas Vinterberg

Thomas Vinterberg was born in Copenhagen in 1969. In 1993 he finished his studies at the National Danish Film School with his film Sidste Omgang (Last round), which received the Jury Prize at the Munich Student Film Festival, as well as the first prize at the Tel Aviv Film Festival. This film was nominated for an Oscar in the Best Short Film section. In the same year he directed another short film, Drengen Der Gik Baglens (The boy who walked backwards) awarded in numerous festivals. In 1995 he founded the Dogme 95 movement, together with the danish director Lars Von Trier. 

 

After his first feature film, De Støste Helte (The greatest heroes) directed in 1996, he directed Festen (The Celebration) in 1997, presented in the Official Selection at the Cannes Film Festival in 1998 which won the Jury Prize. In 2003 he directed his third feature film It’s all about love, (the first in English language) and directed Dear Wendy in 2005 based on a script written by Lars von Trier. In 2012, he directed The Hunt wich was selected at the official competition of the Cannes Film Festival, where the lead actor Mads Mikkelsen won the Best actor award. His latest Feature, Another Round (orginal title: Druk) is a 2020 black comedy-drama was the product of an international co-production between Denmark, Sweden, and the Netherlands, the film again stars Mads Mikkelsen, Thomas Bo Larsen, Magnus Millang, and Lars Ranthe. It had its world premiere at the 45th Toronto International Film Festival. At the 93rd Academy Awards, it won Best International Feature Film and Vinterberg was nominated for Best Director. It also won four European Film Awards, including Best Film, and earned four BAFTA Award nominations, winning for Best Film Not in the English Language.
